DCP theatre's production of Thumbs, is an action-packed comedic mystery by Rupert Holmes, and revolves around serial killings that take place in the mountains of Vermont. This show boasts both a top-notch cast and a stellar crew.
Director Ray Thompson has once again proven why he is the type of director that everyone wants to work with and for. He has assembled a phenomenal ensemble, and expertly guided them through multiple transitions resulting in a fast-paced, entertaining play. The cast beautifully shifts from focusing on the comedy to the mystery without missing a beat. Set designer Cameron Purdy’s authentic A-frame cabin immediately transports you to the "middle of nowhe
re" in which most of the action takes place. Scenic artist Colleen Algeo, once again wows the audience with her artistic brilliance which beautifully complements the set design. It is important to remember that without scenic art and design, there is no set. Lighting and Sound Designer, Bill Algeo, has done a wonderful job depicting the different scenes as they vary from light and fun to ominous and scary. Listen carefully to the radio early on to get a good laugh and perhaps a clue of what's to come... Together, property master Geoff Yaroschak and Costumer Deb Takes helped create a credible environment with realistic costumes adding to the authentic character portrayals. The stamp of board operator and stage manager extraordinaire, Liz Aber, is apparent throughout this play. Liz is well-organized and her role in ensuring this show runs smoothly is evident thanks to her extensive theatre knowledge. Producer Beth Cohen skillfully pieces together all technical aspects of the production team to ensure they fit together as perfectly as a puzzle. She is the glue of this production.
Genee Foulkes is very entertaining as television star, Marta Dunhill. Ms. Foulkes takes us along for quite a ride as she navigates emotional meltdowns and absurdity in true diva fashion. Jeffory Beckers as Freddie Bradshaw, serves as a delightful foil to his ex-wife’s insults. The banter and insulting rhetoric between these two characters is deliciously funny, and is testament to these seasoned actors.
Sam Levy as Todd Monroe illicits laughs the moment he steps on stage. Mr. Levy has a flawless understanding of comedy. He imbues his character with just enough humor to make us laugh without becoming a caricature. This is not an easy feat! As the story progresses, Mr. Levy also demonstrates that things are not always what they seem on the surface.
Darwin Zehr as Wilton Dekes is quirky and uproariously funny in his dcp debut. He portrays his character with such charm that we can't help but root for him. Mr. Zehr reveals his powerful acting chops as his character evolves, from endearingly simple to much more.
Tiffany Peoples delivers a multi-faceted,standout performance as Sheriff Jane Morton with wit and realism. Ms. Peoples has impeccable comic timing, but her impressive talent doesn't stop there. She imbues her character with a likeability and vulnerability that draws the audience in. Her portrayal is fantastic as she manevers through her character's multiple layers to reveal a flawed authenticity. I cannot wait to see what she does next!
Supporting players Caitlyn Swartz as the “female visitor” in a flash-back scene and an uncredited actor portraying multiple mysterious roles round out this fine ensemble of actors.
This production has it all, drama, comedy, intrigue, and guaranteed entertainment... Two thumbs WAY up! Do not miss it! Remaining performances are September 21, 26-28 at 8PM, and September 22nd and 29th at 2:00 pm.
This show is recommended for audiences 16+ for adult themes, strong/suggestive language, the use of a prop gun and gunshot sound effects.
